Biotechnology: This committee has continued its work on GM (genetically modified) foods with particular focus on safety evaluation and public education. The branch's scientific activities in this area have been well received by government, academia, and industry, and its materials have been well accepted and cited as a basis for policy development and public education. The committee held a very successful meeting, "FAO/WHO Symposium on Biotechnology and Food Safety" in collaboration with ILSI's Risk Science Institute (RSI) and International Food Biotechnology Committee (IFBC). In November, the committee also held a workshop and symposium on risk assessment on food biotechnology in collaboration with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and a workshop on risk analysis on genetic modifications to food microorganisms.
