The committee aims to impart knowledge to the scientific community and the public thorough publications, meetings, and the support of research to develop new scientific knowledge on the health effect of sugars. The committee has supported a three-year research program on the medical and nutritional aspects of sugars. Included in the thirteen research projects were studies of the effect of sugars on metabolism, brain function, immune function, food intake, glycemic index, and memory. The committee plans to hold an international symposium on glycemic carbohydrate and health in Tokyo in 2001.
